Displaying Photographs ...

This page has two purposes. On the one hand it is a super, general interest gallery of wild animal photographs and on the other hand it demonstrates how a quantity of sixteen photographs can be successfully displayed on a web page using correct page planning, image optimization and JavaScript preloading techniques. These techniques are all discussed in our other tutorials in the Web Graphics section of Web-Wise-Wizard. We hope you enjoy viewing the page.

Explaining The Process ...

This page contains sixteen 24-bit True Color photographs, saved in "JPG" format so that they can be loaded by a Web browser. They started life as Kodak Photo CD images and came from either a Corel 'Professional Photos' Sampler CD or the Adaptec EZ-SCSI CD. Each photograph was loaded into Corel PhotoPaint where they were sized, cropped and color adjusted for displaying on a web page. They were then saved with the "JPG" settings set to the highest quality possible. Corel PhotoPaint does all these jobs very well indeed.

The problem with displaying True Color photographs on a web page is the unacceptable download time, caused by the very large file size of the photographic images. The 'Photo Optimization' tutorial in the Web Graphics section gives an extreme example of a 15 minute loading time for a web page containg True Color photographs. You are caught between a rock and a hard place in that you can reduce the filesize but the quality of the photograph deteriorates unacceptably or you can specify an acceptable quality but the file size is very large indeed.
